Under British Law we used to have the powers of impeaching any minister under the crown who was guilty of misconduct or corruption. It is currently described as ‘obsolete’. This needs to be reinstated to give accountability and consequence to any minister of Parliament, including the Prime Minister for misconduct and proven corruption or kick backs.
I think this would be more important than ever. Politicians don’t seem to have integrity any more. They used to resign if they were involved in a scandal, but these days they just carry on as if nothing happened. Take for example an MP that beats the living daylights out of a constituent and thinks he should keep his post! It’s bad enough that he wasn’t sent to prison under our two tier justice system, but to not resign is incredulous to all moral, law abiding citizens.
A vote of no confidence (in The Commons) is the usual way to get rid of a Prime
Minister (and indeed, a government).
Arguably, the PM/King does not need to respect a MonC, however the impeachment power was seen as overrulling the King’s authority. That is to say, appointments made by the King would not survive impeachment.
Impeachment is very unlikely however. The system is remarkably like that of the US, the Commons would bring the inditement and the Lords would try the case. Given that the Lords are mostly life peers who are political appointees, and the Commons are controlled by the PM, it isn’t a great way to remove the PM.
OK, lets say you get rid of a PM you don’t like. Who is likely to replace him? Angela Reiner? Yvette Cooper? Wes Streeting? As bad as the current PM is, I can’t say there’s anyone on that Labour front bench worth the effort of impeaching him for. Sometimes you just have to put up with the PM the country voted for. Or more specifically, the one everyone didn’t bother to vote against.
You just got my vote. However we need to clarify what the process of impeachment is, my recommendation is that application need to go through the high court, but that a form of legal aid be introduced to protect the people.
Legaly the Labour Party could currently be charged with fraud if their manifesto was a legally binding document. We can certainly say that they came to office through the liberal use of deception and in a time when the country was desperate. Who ever heard of a 33% of the vote leading to a landslide?
I would recomend that it be taken to a pannel of no less than 5 High court Judges and then taken to social media for a referendum. That way there are properly placed weights checks and balances and even the losing MP can’t argue with the fairness they have received.
I do think that the death penalty should be reinstated for treason against the crown and the country. I also think that we need to widen the scope of this to include all serving members of Parliament and the House of Lords.
