I think we also need to promote Nuclear Power. From the research I have seen, it looks like the cleanest energy production. Understandably, it could go wrong in a way that far exceeds the others, however the probability of it going wrong seems to be low. I also think there could be some value from localising energy production to the individual. I think people opting for Solar panels on their own property for less reliance on the grid is a fair way to go if the Solar panels last a very long time and become more recyclable over time. If each household can produce power for itself, we have less of a reliance on massive corporations where people complain about the profits they make.
Probably the last āFor the Peopleā Politician of the Labour Party, Tony Ben set up the British Nationalised Oil and Gas company back in the 70ās. During the Reagan and Thatcher Era the free market economy was the the king of the day and Thatcher sold this amazing company and created BP. I think we should take a very long look at the contract that was purchased by BP and see how much of it if anything we can actually take back for the people. I know that nationalisation seems like a socialist agenda but actually why canāt a well run government profit from the private sectore and make use of the private markets in order to reduce the tax burden of the people.
Sweden swam through the financial crisis because they have a nationalised oil and gas company. We burned almost all diplomatic credentials we had left after Iraq by taking British money out of Iceland using anti Terror legislation. Our finances need backing and so if this is about a nationalised oil company it would have my backing.
It now appears that the power outage in Spain was because they tried to go all net zero for a day. Well, that worked well. Maybe the government will learn from that. And maybe pigs will fly.
Ah, an altruist? History seems to indicate that nationalised companies in this country have typically been extraordinarily badly run. You may say what about the awful water, electricity and rail companies now, which have been privatised? That would be a valid point, but I Ofwat, Often, etc are the problem
We did get the phones right before privatisation. I remember my mum working for the telephone exchange. If we were to nationalise an oil and gas company, I would point to the Swedish model which has been a remarkable success. Britains problem is that we have too many managers and too few leaders. Then just like the buses here come a Ben Habib and a Rupert Lowe. so you get 2 at once, lol.
We donāt need any more Shwine Fockeās over Britain thank you very much lol.
Going into steel production you need coking coal, currently purchased from the USA after stupid conservatives blosed the mine down.
I worked for Post Office Telephones, later BT, from 1963 to 1973 and we certainly did not get the phones right before privatisation. That was one of the most inefficient and wasteful organisations I have have ever had the misfortune to work for. The organisation was littered with petty fiefdoms who kept on doing what they did knowing full well that they were not contributing but were simply wasting resources. These bad practices continued well after privatisation while BT tried to winkle them out and many still exist in the dark underbelly of middle management.
Nationalised industries are not owned by the people, they are owned by the government and run by civil servants. That alone makes them inefficient as civil servants are invariably those who could not make it in the real world.
History on the whole indicates that governments run industries less well than companies. However, your principle is spot on. Had the excessive windfall taxes introduced a few years ago gone into a national fund for the future rather than plugging holes created by appallingly bad government, we would indeed benefit as a nation.
