Allow a choice on where a portion of Taxes go

For an amount, say 10-15% of your taxes you should be able to choose where the funding goes.
This could be done through a .gov website using a NI number plus authentication (as required if applying for driving license etc).

This would allow more direct funding in areas where needed.

The limit of say 10-15% is so that it is not too damaging if everyone all votes the same way.

All planned spending should be done assuming no extra money then the additional should be given after.

Good idea. I look at my tax bill and aside from defence spending I get nothing from it.

Smaller government essentially achieves the same thing. You pay less taxes and can spend the difference wherever you want. And you will spend your money much better thannthe government spends your money.

I would somewhat agree,
But ensuring funding goes where we want is not the same as stopping all funding.
Better reallocating funds vs removing funds.

There a lots of arguments on the right between using these tools and powers or removing them. And in general I agree that lots of the current powers need removing.
But to fix the country I don’t think we can rely on libertarian solutions, at least in the short term.

Long story short why not both.

I had the idea of making NHS taxes optional, with the catch that anyone who opts out would be registered in a database and refused any NHS treatment. I’m not sure if that suggestion deserves a separate topic so I’ll just comment it here.

It is a fair shout, the person who doesn’t pay into the NHS would likely go private in that case.
I could picture a website screen profile that has tickboxes to show where you don’t mind your taxes going.
Now you got me thinking about this too…

As someone in their late 20’s I can tell you my costs for private insurance are around £50/month.
My NI costs are far higher.

The issue is that the vast majority of the NHS costs go to the old and rely on payments from the young who don’t really use it.

They will when theyre old… and the old people who have worked here all their lives paid for it when they were young and didnt need it.

If you scrap it, the old folks get a refund for all theyve paid in…

I meant the problem with the proposal to have a choice on NHS funding is that because the young pay for it and dont use it, if you gave them the option the NHS would collapse.

Some very rough calculations around NHS costs per tax payer.

£153 billion (NHS spending) / 30 million (taxpayers) = £5,100 per taxpayer (£425 per month)

When we all say NHS is a national treasure, they never mention this part do they?

There has got to be a better way to do this…

I have been talking about this one for so long. I’m sure it would be simple to set up and app with relevant verifications with sliders on them that allow you to allocate tax to where you think it should go. This would be an incredible piece of information to have to compare to the current budget. Everyone who is on the app allocates their tax and we see what the budget would look like from this. I bet it would be drastically different. I would be interested to know how large the portion of foreign aid would be.

That’s a good idea, it would create a financial incentive for the NHS to become competitive.
