Britain urgently needs a First Amendment-style protection to safeguard the fundamental right to free speech

Britain urgently needs a First Amendment-style protection to safeguard the fundamental right to free speech.

In recent years, we have witnessed a worrying trend where individuals, journalists, and even public figures face censorship, intimidation, or legal repercussions simply for expressing their views.

A British equivalent of the First Amendment would enshrine the right to free speech into law, ensuring that every citizen has the freedom to speak their mind without fear of government interference or social retribution. Such a policy would protect robust debate, encourage the exchange of ideas, and uphold the principles of a truly free and democratic society. Now more than ever, we must defend the right to express opinions, even if they are unpopular, to preserve the liberties that underpin our nation.

I agree but I would see this as part of a British Bill of Rights essentially. The problem is that the system of conventions is no longer providing the average citizen necessary protection against the machinations of the state so we need something more codified.

I would also suggest that the inclusion to the Free Speech component on its own would need to also consider the following protections as a precurser to a replacement to the ECHR which currently is where those protections are being erroded.

Rights and Freedoms: Guarantee fundamental rights such as the right to a fair trial, freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and freedom from discrimination, ensuring that these rights are balanced with the need to maintain public order and national security.

National Security and Public Order: Explicitly provide for the protection of national security and public order, recognising that certain rights may be limited when necessary to protect the country and its citizens from threats, including terrorism, extremism, and organised crime.

Cultural and Social Context: Will reflect British cultural norms and societal values, promoting respect for the rule of law, democracy, and mutual respect between individuals.

Legal Protections: That will ensure that all individuals in the UK are entitled to legal protections, including access to justice and legal aid where appropriate. It will also allow for the appropriate level of judicial review to ensure that any human rights breaches are addressed through the national legal system.

Agreed that a new Constitution and a British Bill of Rights are needed. 1st Amendment: Right to Freedom of Speech.
Fundamentally, UK laws By UK people and devoid of influence of foreign courts

There is a british Bill of Rights. 1689; and the Magna Carta before that.

But we need a proper constitution, not a bill [which can be undermined by future bills far too easily].
