The proposal is to create a British equivalent to Alcatraz prison, the famous institution President Trump has decided to re-open, and for the same purpose of holding the worst of the worst. It would be modelled after Alcatraz and It would be a facility to hold the most dangerous and terrible prisoners who cannot even be safely (or palatably) held on the British mainland lest they potentially escape. A good location for such a facility would be the island of South Georgia due obviously to its remote location and somewhat low potential for escape attempts, especially successful ones.
There’s no denying the results of this in El-Salvador. It’s gone from having one of the world’s highest murder rates to one of the lowest in just a few years. It’s now one of the safest countries in the world proving that sending criminals to prison works.
The UK wouldn’t even have to go that far or be as harsh because the rot has only just started to set in. Even building a few more regular prisons and actually enforcing the laws we’ve already got would be a game changer. The human rights lawyers will hate it, but notice how they have nothing to say about the human rights of victims.
Probably to a large degree that’s true but there’s no denying the symbolic value. For the public just knowing that we have an Alcatraz of our own would be a welcome reassurance I’m sure. Especially when there’s a particularly heinous case and the public can know they’re freezing their butt off down there with nothing but Penguins for company for the next several decades of their life if not indefinitely. And having somewhere like that to send the absolute worst and most dangerous that’s offshore would be handy. I wouldn’t go full El Salvador though, Bukele gives me the creeps. They just scoop anyone and everyone whether they’re guilty or not and that’s GDR behaviour in my book.
I agree. Like I said, we wouldn’t need to go down the El-Salvador route. Just building a new super max prison and actually sending people there after respecting their right to a fair trial would send a message.
Personally I would prefer if we took a section of Libya, for human rights of course ;), and the used that outpost as a location for massive prison you could do one better and create Libyan passports for it and hand them to people before revoking their British passport.
2 birds 1 stone,
No more Libyan slave markets or people flooding into Europe. Also a location where Europe could pay to export their worst offenders to as well as illegal migrants.
I would say that would not work. Libya would be the best place to put it if you want to aid in them escaping. Security on south georgia would pretty much take care of itself. It’s a wind swept island in the south atlantic, hundreds of miles from any other land. Libya on the other hand is basically a jihadist social hall. The security alone would take up the entire british army as it currently stands. The moment the prison got attacked and the walls breached they would all dissappear never to be seen again. Wouldn’t make any difference to anything else happening in Libya.
I’d oppose using South Georgia mostly because of the research stations we have there and the penguin colonies. I also worry about the sheer cost of transport. I would be happy using the Flannan Isles or something similar. They are 33km away from any civilisation and that is through some of the roughest waters that sank the Spanish Armada.
I suppose that could work yes, that’s a good idea. Although I have a solution for the Penguins, we could employ them as guards. They already live there and come with their own uniform. No but in all seriousness it could be a good contender. There’s plenty of options.
