The DWP & Labour government with their new ‘Green Paper’, plans to massively cut welfare benefits - plunging most disabled people into a state of absolute fear.
Labours new Green Paper is an attack on the most vulnerable, those genuinely in need of benefits bec they cannot work. There’s still time to stop this cruel Bill going ahead. It can be legally challenged in the courts, I hope disability charities are working towards doing so. To me this issue is just as important as the Winter Fuel Payments cuts as many disabled & vulnerable people will fall into poverty & degrading living situations, some sadly may even consider taking their own lives. Currently, the disability cuts & proposed changes to Universal Credit & Personal Independence payments (PIP) are incredibly stressful for most, if not all disabled people- which will inevitably exacerbate symptoms of health conditions.
In my opinion, the government should focus on the number of migrants, foreign criminals, legal migrants on visas who have never worked, or barely worked in Britain & are claiming welfare. Muslims with multiple wives, foreign fraud gangs, hotel costs for boat migrants, any migrant or foreign national claiming either UCWRA or PIP (disability benefits) - should be a priority for scrutiny also.
Some figures which you may already be aware of-
More than a million foreign nationals are claiming benefits from the British taxpayer, costing over £7.5 billion a year.
Hotel costs alone are at least £8M per day!
Universal credit for refugees alone was £1.1 bn in 2024
Each migrant crossing the channel is costing the taxpayer £41,000 a year.
These exorbitant costs are why the UK benefits bill is so excessively high. Yes, I’m sure that there are British born people milking the system because its easier (e.g. young people getting sick notes for anxiety & depression who have never worked), especially when you consider the impact of lockdowns from Covid & how mindsets can change - easily falling into a pattern lethargy. Of course, this should be tackled in the appropriate way, but I feel the focus needs to be on migrants & those exploiting the system from abroad first.
Yet the Labour government doesn’t even mention the staggering impact of mass migration (& legal migration) on the welfare bill. Instead, disabled people are made to feel a burden on the state. Just cuts, no programs or assistance are on offer. Somehow the expectation is that if money is taken from disabled people, they will have no choice but to go out to work. This is not the case, some people just cannot work due to the level & nature of their disability. In fact PIP is designed in part to enable disabled people to get into the workplace or work from home. So removing PIP will actually lead to higher levels of unemployment for those claimants currently in work. It doesn’t make sense, especially when you consider the huge added cost of tribunal appeal applications, which will all need to be assessed.
Yes, there is room to make some benefits cuts & encourage disabled people into work
(many want to work but are trapped in a system of fear because of a perception that the DWP is set up to punish & try to catch you out), but the approach needs to be careful & supportive one, due to the vulnerabilities of claimants, & the possible impact on individual lives. Not the ‘pulling the rug from underneath’ style that Labour wants to implement.
