People want to come to the UK. Why? Because we are very attractive to them (instant benefits, money, accommodation etc).
Smashing the gangs and paying France is a waste of time. We need to change things so they don’t want to come here.
I would suggest we set up a tented camp on an uninhabited island off the coast of Scotland. Provide them with food and minimum sustenance. Public (shared) telephones, no access to internet and no travel from the island until their claim has been decided.
I think you’ll find no one wants to come any more…
I think there is a deeper issue here and that is the fact that there are sectors of the economy that are structurally dependent on immigration (be it legal or otherwise) and I think we need to move the focus of this goal away from being just about border security but about a broad package of measures across the policy spectrum.
True but this should be tackled by legal / controlled immigration. My topic addresses the question of illegal immigration (the boats) only.
I do think that we need to tackle the issues together because one way to stop the boats is to open up more legal routes…
I totally agree with you Lawrie. Don’t forget, illegal immigrants are criminals under our law. The way to stop illegal immigration is to say “That anyone who enters the UK illegally will never be given leave to stay here no matter what their status” simple as that!
I agree with you Lawrie. Any illegal entrants should be interned until such time as their application is decided. Once decided, refused applicants should be immediately deported with no right to appeal and no access to legal aid.
Until we can detain and deport we won’t be able to stop the boats coming. On the legal immigration why can’t we try making deals with Poland ect for seasonal workers on 3 month visas and if they behave properly and leave on time then they will be prioritised for next visa . Also why can’t we waive tuition fees for student doctors in return for committing to stay for 5 yrs work in nhs . We can choose the people we need to build the economy and country
The boat people should be returned to France. The RNLI and Border force should pick up the illegal migrants from the dinghy’s, turn around and return them all to the French beaches. We should stop all money to France, refuse all fishing licences for the French fishermen until the French government stop allowing the immigrants to leave their beaches. Including stowaways in the back of Lorrie’s leaving French ports.
If this was happening in reverse. There is absolutely no way the French people would be allowing this to come to their country.
I think we should make an International statement saying there are no longer any FREE benefits for making an illegal entry into the UK, period. Then deal with the ECHR after. As it could take years for the European courts to contest and by that time we will have proof that stopping benefits reduces illegal migration. As you say Lawrie “smashing the gangs is a complete waste of time”.
Exactly! Remove the incentive and there’ll be no gangs to ‘smash’!
We don’t need people from other countries to fill employment gaps, we have millions claiming benefits, get them off benefits and out to work.
No illegal immigrants should be allowed in the country, turn the boats around immediately, stop all benefits, stop money to the French, stop their fishing rights.
Shut the doors for all immigration for at least 5 years.
Legal immigration should be about 30 to 40000 max and that is when the country has returned to better times with restrictions to allow only working people that we need and when we get the right people and numbers close the doors again.
Net “ILLEGAL” immigration should not happen, at all. Crime is inevitable, but we should be preventing 99% and catching and returning the rest, and then some to make up for lost time. Trump proved it can be done.
Ban halal, ban the burqa, stop all benefits unless the intended recipient has contributed for 3- 5 years, stop giving illegal entrants money and accommodation, (the tents on an island sound good) and they will stop coming and those that are here will leave.
100 percent ban all face coverings and if people want to protest about other countries go elsewhere. Only British flags shoukd be flown, ban the rest and if people don’t like it leave.
Really? Do you think we need more people in Britain? We have a failing economy, largely due to the profligacy of the EU with its deliberate deindustrialisation of the UK, the obstinacy of the Unions, and the greed of multi-nationals.
We do not need boat loads of ill-educated, third-world ‘dentists and doctors’ arriving on our shores every day. But neither do we need more legal migration channels. What we need is a policy of capped, controlled migration based on a ‘what you can bring to the UK’, not what you want to take from us.
The spurious argument that we ‘need’ more migration is a fallacy perpetuated by big business. As our population inexorably grows, so we need more people to support it.
But in an ideal world, the UK population should be reduced back to 1960’s levels of around 60 million. Thereby providing quality employment, housing, education and healthcare for this reduced population.
All foreign criminals should be deported to their country of origin and no benefits payments, accommodation and other state benefits handed out to immigrants for the first 5 years, or until they can demonstrate that they are positively benefitting the country’s economy.
I love your idea of stopping all money to France and refusing all fishing licences for the French Fishermen.
Few know this - Halal is simply a watered down version of Kosher - if Halal is banned Muslims can just eat Kosher food instead, it’s allowed for them.
The smugglers sell the UK as the promised land. We can make all the changes in the world but asking as those smugglers sell that story they will come. They will make their money and those illegal immigrants will already be here so how do you communicate the change to the ii? Can we perhaps tackle to smugglers? No doubt you get rid of one and another pops up as it is with any crime but could we sanction or in some way force their own governments to deal with them? Maybe we could punish them so severely or push their own government to so as it’s just not viable for them?
Many choose the UK because they speak English and because our former colonies educational systems are still deeply embedded with our colonial influence so they too see Britain as the promised land. Those from former French colonies usually end up in France and so on. Can the eradication of that influence in their education system change that notion? Perhaps. I say that knowing that it may be a stretch but it’s worth noting.
Many see it as somewhere they can come and build a life, believing the UK to have many opportunities. Once upon a time but not now. How can we communicate that to them?
Some come because they have existing family ties here. Can we educate those families so as they can communicate the reality to them?
We also seriously need to consider how our human rights laws relate to illegal immigrants and asylum seekers as they are taken advantage of. What can we do to change that without impacting on the rights of legal immigrants and natives?
Regarding the dependency on foreign workers in the NHS…
- For skilled jobs, e.g. doctors, it highlights decades of government failure and short-term thinking.
(i) They have not created adequate numbers of medical school places.
(ii) Despite opening a number of new medical schools (c. 6 years ago), universities are addicted to foreign student fees. Many places are taken by foreign students who then return to their countries of origin - not benefiting the NHS.
(iii) There is also a bottle neck where newly qualified doctors cannot get training places for their onward professional development. Changing this, for example in specialist surgical training is difficult as there are only so many trainees that can fit around the operating table to watch and learn and do.
To reverse the dependency, provide good jobs for British people and capacity for the NHS needs top to bottom systematic thinking and long term planning of every element from leaving school to the life of a long-service consultant. - For unskilled jobs, it highlights our country’s addiction to cheap foreign labour and issues with our benefits system. The low-skilled jobs need to be properly paid and it needs to be made much more difficult and less attractive to be on Universal Credit.
I’m afraid Kosher should also be banned. It is still a cruel treatment of animals and why so many Jews that I know are vegetarian.
