Offer summertime taster courses helping young people decide on possible career courses.
Uplift apprenticeships by affording them more status by including graduation ceremonies
Many young people crave the “university experience” so offering some kind of away from home living for a short time for offsite training could help with the uptake of apprenticeships.
Bring back some kind of YTS. Whilst they had a bad name in the 80s, many people , including myself embarked on very successful careers via this route.

I was fortunate in the 1980’s to have an electrician apprenticeship. Most of my class were YTS. The problem with the scheme (as far as the electrical trade in Scotland saw it) is that it academically qualified individuals but left them in limbo if they were unable to get a position that allowed them to finish their time. I’ve been reading about Jim McColl’s attempts to try something different at Newlands Junior College. That seems worth exploring but it would take a government willing to take on the educational blob.

During my apprenticeship, back in the 60s, we switched from day release to block release at the local college of further education (probably a university now) and all felt much more like students. The time at work also went better as we were there full-time and not just three or four days a week.
