As mentioned elsewhere the tax burden is far too high and constricts people’s ability to lead their lives as they choose. We hear everywhere that we are not having enough children, and our active tax paying population is shrinking as our long lives push more of us into pensionable age. It is about time the tax system supported the nuclear family, which is the bedrock of the nation. Younger Britons cannot afford homes and do not start having families until they are in their 30s. Few will have more than two kids, many will have one or none at all, leading to a shrinking population. ENABLE them to start families sooner. Allow them to have a breadwinner and a home maker. Amalgamate their taxes and benefits so they get the benefit of two personal allowances over their shared income. Let them go through the progressive bands together. Keeping more of their money to spend on their family life. Prioritise young married couples for any government subsidized housing (whatever form that takes) and give incentives for the children they bear.
