Unemployment benefit and the effect of unemployment are a huge drain on our economy and social wellbeing. If all unemployment benefits were ceased and an agency created whereby anyone not working could immediately start paid work, either for existing employers or the agency itself -
Admin could be done by those with admin abilities.
Unskilled work by all those fit enough, pot hole repair, infrastructure maintenance, care work in care homes and hospitals, more skilled work by those qualified. The list is endless. Pay rates as appropriate.
Maybe some pride in honest labour admired by the community, perhaps a distinctive uniform where appropriate.
It could be a self propelling national agency where workers could be fed into private or public employment, the culture of living off the state would cease and pride in honest toil would do much to restore the welfare and wellbeing of citizens.
Properly controlled and managed would cost far less than paying people to do nothing. A fully employed nation would be one of optimism and growth.
